Shopify SEO: A Beginner’s Guide to Ranking Your Store in 2025

Why SEO Matters for Shopify Stores

Let's be honest, Shopify gives you a great head start in terms of SEO. But that doesn't mean your store is fully optimized the moment you hit publish.

Here's why we care about your SEO so much (and why you should probably too):

An image of Google to represent how SEO is determined by Google and how compatible your site is in the eyes of Google.

We have helped brands go from invisible to front page Google results by focusing on the stuff people ignore, and not using AI. Here is exactly how we do it.

Keyword Research

Before anything gets optimized, we take a step back and ask ourselves "What do people actually search for?"

That's where keyword research comes in. It's basically a cheat sheet for what customers are actually looking for and searching when they are ready to buy. Some tools that can find Keywords and track them to see if they are relevant and well performing are:

Pro tips - If you want to know your competitors rank for, plug their site into Ahrefs or Semrush and steal their keywords (legally).

Optimize your product pages

You would be shocked how many Shopify stores skip this! Here is what we always check for our clients:

Title tags

Make sure your main keyword is right there in the product title. ("Eco friendly yoga mat | Free UK shipping")

Meta descriptions

Keep it just under 160 characters and make people want to click on your page. ("Shop our eco friendly yoga mats - sustainably made, free UK delivery")

Image Alt text

Google can't see your images, so you'll need to describe them. ("Close up eco friendly yoga mat on wooden floor")

A checklist of product optimization techniques

Internal linking - Keep people on your site for longer

This one is simple but powerful. This is an internal link

If you write a blog called 'Best Yoga gear for beginners', make sure you are linking to your actual products. Not only does it help increase your SEO, it keeps people browsing longer - which Google loves by the way!

Start blogging (Yes, really)

Blogging isn't dead, you wouldn't be reading this if it was! In fact, it is one of the easiest ways to drive traffic to your online store(and it costs nothing but your time). Every blog should:

  • Target a specific keyword
  • Link to at least one product page
  • Include something visual (images, infographics etc)

Check the technical stuff

Shopify handles a lot of the technical SEO for you, but there are a few boxes we always double check:

  1. SSL is enabled (your URL starts with https://)
  2. You have submitted your sitemap to Google Search Console
  3. Your site is mobile-friendly
  4. You aren't duplicating content across various product variants

If you aren't sure about any of this, we can sort it out for you all in one go!

Build backlinks

Backlinks are still one of Google's top ranking factors. Just think of them like other websites vouching for you. Some easy ways to get them are:

  • Offer to write guest blogs for other people
  • Collaborate with small influencers
  • Share data heavy content such as Case studies or infographics
  • Submit your site to directories in your niche

It is slow, but totally worth it!

Make sure you track it all

What's the point of doing all of this if your not tracking results?

We always recommend:

Once its all in place, check in around once a month and tweak it based on what's working and what isn't.

Showing what analysis of performance and comparison could look like.
